Taking in all Merion has to offer, one drawing at a time

HAVERFORD - At a golf tournament that bars cameras and phones, Max Mason was better equipped than most to capture images of the first round at Merion.

Armed with a pencil and sketchbook, the artist best known for his baseball-themed murals at Citizens Bank Park was working briskly to knock out drawings of all 18 holes on the East course Thursday.

“I got here at 6 a.m. and so far I’ve done holes one through nine,” Mason said while standing with his tools on a hillside high above the ninth green a little after 1 p.m. “I play golf, and I’ve played Merion West, but I have never been to a golf tournament before and have never really (sketched or painted) golf before.”

A resident of the Wynnewood section of Lower Merion Township, Mason road his bike to U.S. Open, parking at Haverford College.

“I’ve had a great time,” he said. “Walking around a golf tournament kind of feels like you’re walking onto a sports field and right up to the athletes, which is awesome. You can also find a quiet spot like this where no one’s around.”

A graduate of Vassar College, Mason began painting baseball subjects as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. His three 10’x30’ murals of Citizens Bank Park, Veterans Stadium and Connie Mack Stadium are featured at Harry the K’s beyond the left field seats at Citizens Bank Park.

Other Mason works are located in the Diamond Club behind home plate and Phillies front offices. He has also painted several murals for the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.

“Right now, I’m working on something called The Baseball Project that has me painting all 30 Major League Baseball ballparks,” he said. “I’ve hit nine of them so far and I will be in Chicago in a week.”

Mason is represented by the Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia, where he has shown his landscape, still life and baseball paintings since 1985.

Poulter 3 under through 3 holes; play halted

Ian Poulter is probably cursing Mother Nature right about now.

The just flew the whistle to halt play because of the threat of lightning and nasty storms at Merion.

Poulter was three under through three holes.

Talk about your hot start.

Now he has to hope he doesn’t cool off while waiting out the weather.

Here's what you need to know about the Open at a glance

Here's a thumbnail look at the U.S. Open golf championship, which starts Thursday:

Site: Merion Golf Club

The course: Merion was designed by Hugh Wilson and opened in May 1914. Its Scottish-styled bunkers are known as the "white faces of Merion." Unique to Merion are the wicker baskets painted orange and red attached to the pins, instead of the traditional flag. Merion has hosted 18 USGA championships, the most of any golf course. This is its first U.S. Open since 1981.

Length: 6,996 yards

Par: 36-34_70

Field: 156 players (10 amateurs)

Defending champion: Webb Simpson.

U.S. Open champions at Merion: Olin Dutra (1934), Ben Hogan (1950), Lee Trevino (1971), David Graham (1981).

Noteworthy: Merion is the shortest course for a major championship since the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.

Quoteworthy: "I don't think it's going to be a low-scoring U.S. Open. I hope it's not going to be a low-scoring U.S. Open. We'll see. I think the golf course has enough defense." — Graeme McDowell.

Key statistic: The winning score has been lower each of the previous four times the U.S. Open was at Merion.

Tiger tales: This is the first time since 2000 that Tiger Woods has won four times on the PGA Tour before the U.S. Open. He won the U.S. Open that year by 15 shots.

Key groups: 1:14 p.m., Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott; 7:11 a.m., Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Keegan Bradley; 12:52 p.m., Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer.

Television (all times EDT): Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., ESPN; 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., NBC; 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., ESPN. Saturday and Sunday, noon to 7:30 p.m., NBC. Monday, if necessary, noon-2 p.m. ESPN; 2 p.m.-playoff conclusion, NBC

Half hour until the first tee time

We are just about a half hour until the first group heads for the first tee to kick off the 113th U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club.

Rain is on the way, but it’s not here yet.

The first storm is just now approaching western Montgomery County.

The first part of that big ‘Derecho’ storm is expected to hit the area later this morning, around 9 a.m.

In other words, pack your umbrella if you’re headed to the Open.

Cross-country traveler Phil Mickelson is on the driving range

If you’re a Phil Mickelson fan, don’t fret about him making his early tee time after flying back and forth across the country for his daughter’s graduation.

‘Lefty’ is on the driving range and ready to hit the course.

Rain, rain go away, come again ... Thursday?

The torrential downpours Monday on top of the rain last week, certainly have made for a muddy Merion Golf Club.

Now, there is a potential of rain hitting the area Thursday during the first round of the U.S. Open. Not just any rain, mind you, the National Weather Service is talking end of the world, "Caddyshack" type of rain.

Still, ticket holders, unless the monsoon actually does hit, you better be prepared with ponchos and rain boots.

"If we are able to get in four hours of play throughout the day that constitutes a full day of play," said Reg Jones, Director of Operations for U.S. Open Championships. "If we are unable to accomplish that, then we would look into possible refunds or possibly accommodating fans for another session. The policy is stated on the back of the fans ticket."

Much like the Phillies and their attempts to make sure there are no rainouts, expect the USGA to get the players on the course. If the rain is falling when you wake up Thursday morning, make sure you check out delcotimes.com for up-to-the-minute updates.

Heron's Nest: All eyes on the skies at Merion

The Phillies are all wet. So, unfortunately, is Merion. While today looks to be glorious, tomorrow could be a washout for the first day of the U.S. Open. It’s in the Heron’s Nest.

In honor of Ben Hogan, 5 great 1-iron shots

Since very player coming to Merion is stopping and trying to recreate the magic of Ben Hogan’s famous 1-iron shots, the AP’s Doug Ferguson lists his 5 best 1-iron shots. Or as he puts in, cutting up the course with a butter knife.

A fashion girls day on the green

The rain stopped. Thank God! Just in time for my very fashionable friend to hit the green and share her thoughts on all things golf. Granted, my source is more interested in fashion than golf. Actually, as of 7am this morning, she was looking less than thrilled with her impending date. But, sometimes a girl has got to do what a girl has got to do!
What she recounted from her journey into the "golf world" was indeed very insightful! The train ride into Rosemont and subsequent shuttle went smoothly. The main hurdle in her travels was.....MUD. Lots of mud!
Apparently the male spectators kept it basic. The standard golf shirts, baseball hats and shades were par for the course:)! The ladies were a little more inventive. The most noteworthy among them sporting shorts with their Hunter Boots!
Perhaps her most titillating observation was this, "some of the golfers were young and HOT"! Really? Who new?
There were plenty of autographs to be had and the 14th tee box was the place to be!
At the end of the day, I'd say at least one girl had a pretty good day on the green!

Waiting for the Roar

To be fair I know nothing about golf.  However I do have one experience with  the US Open.  It involves childbirth.
Seven years ago Phil Mickelson was supposed to win and I was desperately trying to end 30 plus hours of labor.  It could have gone smoother.  That would have required at least one person in the room actually looking at me and not the television.  Yes, that does include my husband as well!
June, 18th 2006 the baby was finally born.  Phil lost it all on the 18th hole.  That is what I know about golf.
Three boys, two dogs and eight fish later, the US Open is once again an unavoidable presence in my life!  as I think back, I remember the onslaught of emotions.  The hopes and fears of parenthood.  I can't help thinking that at this time, on this day, Some of us may be experiencing the same thoughts.  Only this time it's about golf and our town.  Our capacity to handle these new set of circumstances.  In other words, our baby, The US Open.
And after all the anticipation, hopes and dreams, fears and trepidation it seems as though we will all get through it!
Yes, it's pouring rain.  Yes, today is a practice day.  But, we seem prepared.  The traffic is flowing, the roadblocks are out, police are present and Tiger was on the greens.
Kind of like watching a sleeping baby in those first blissful days of parenthood.  The diapers are stacked, clothes washed and ready and the grandmothers are ready for action.  We've got this all under control.  Right?

Only time will tell.  On Thursday, the baby wakes up.

Former Masters champ Mike Weir added to Open field for Merion

HAVERFORD — Former Masters champion Mike Weir has done just enough at qualifying to earn a spot at the U.S. Open.

Weir got one of six spots that had been set aside to accommodate anyone who moved into the top 60 in the world ranking published Monday. Kyle Stanley, who finished third at the Memorial, was at No. 60. He was the only one who qualified from the latest world ranking.

After that, five players who were alternates at the 36-hole sectional qualifying spots filled the 156-man field.

Weir lost in a playoff at the main Ohio qualifier and was first alternate. Also getting into the U.S. Open as a qualifying alternate were Ryan Palmer, Ryan Yip, Rikard Karlberg and Harold Varner III.

Weir has not played in the U.S. Open since 2010.

Road closures and rubber duckies

7:50 AM: Township police block the intersection of Haverford and Eagle Roads for the Open. Traffic was only increased by 10% this morning and thats probably due to the weather.

Kudos to the Township for getting waste removal done on Wynnewood Road before 6:30 AM.

A little bit of rain to start Open week

Tiger, Rory to play 1st 2 rounds together with Adam Scott

Woods, McIlroy, Scott together at US Open

ARDMORE, Pa. (AP) — Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott will play together the opening two rounds of the U.S. Open next week at Merion.

For the third straight year, U.S. Open officials have put the top three players in the world ranking in the same group. The U.S. Open disclosed the tee times in a tweet Friday, with the rest of the draw expected later in the day. The feature group will start at 1:14 p.m. Thursday off the first tee.
