USGA says play will resume at U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club at 12:10 p.m.
Ian Poulter is probably cursing Mother Nature right about now.
The just flew the whistle to halt play because of the threat of lightning and nasty storms at Merion.
Poulter was three under through three holes.
Talk about your hot start.
Now he has to hope he doesn’t cool off while waiting out the weather.
Phil Mickelson, fresh off a cross-country flight, stuck it in the fairway and then on the gree, but then three-putted to start the Open with a bogey.
Weather watch getting serious with severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 11 a.m.
Here's a thumbnail look at the U.S. Open golf championship, which starts Thursday:
Site: Merion Golf Club
The course: Merion was designed by Hugh Wilson and opened in May 1914. Its Scottish-styled bunkers are known as the "white faces of Merion." Unique to Merion are the wicker baskets painted orange and red attached to the pins, instead of the traditional flag. Merion has hosted 18 USGA championships, the most of any golf course. This is its first U.S. Open since 1981.
Length: 6,996 yards
Par: 36-34_70
Field: 156 players (10 amateurs)
Defending champion: Webb Simpson.
U.S. Open champions at Merion: Olin Dutra (1934), Ben Hogan (1950), Lee Trevino (1971), David Graham (1981).
Noteworthy: Merion is the shortest course for a major championship since the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
Quoteworthy: "I don't think it's going to be a low-scoring U.S. Open. I hope it's not going to be a low-scoring U.S. Open. We'll see. I think the golf course has enough defense." — Graeme McDowell.
Key statistic: The winning score has been lower each of the previous four times the U.S. Open was at Merion.
Tiger tales: This is the first time since 2000 that Tiger Woods has won four times on the PGA Tour before the U.S. Open. He won the U.S. Open that year by 15 shots.
Key groups: 1:14 p.m., Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott; 7:11 a.m., Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Keegan Bradley; 12:52 p.m., Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer.
Television (all times EDT): Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., ESPN; 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., NBC; 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., ESPN. Saturday and Sunday, noon to 7:30 p.m., NBC. Monday, if necessary, noon-2 p.m. ESPN; 2 p.m.-playoff conclusion, NBC
We are just about a half hour until the first group heads for the first tee to kick off the 113th U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club.
Rain is on the way, but it’s not here yet.
The first storm is just now approaching western Montgomery County.
The first part of that big ‘Derecho’ storm is expected to hit the area later this morning, around 9 a.m.
In other words, pack your umbrella if you’re headed to the Open.
If you’re a Phil Mickelson fan, don’t fret about him making his early tee time after flying back and forth across the country for his daughter’s graduation.
‘Lefty’ is on the driving range and ready to hit the course.
Not going to the Open at Merion. Stick close to the TV. There will be wall-to-wall coverage today:
9 a.m. on ESPN
3 p.m. on NBC
5 p.m. on ESPN

To be fair I know nothing about golf. However I do have one experience with the US Open. It involves childbirth.
Seven years ago Phil Mickelson was supposed to win and I was desperately trying to end 30 plus hours of labor. It could have gone smoother. That would have required at least one person in the room actually looking at me and not the television. Yes, that does include my husband as well!
June, 18th 2006 the baby was finally born. Phil lost it all on the 18th hole. That is what I know about golf.
Three boys, two dogs and eight fish later, the US Open is once again an unavoidable presence in my life! as I think back, I remember the onslaught of emotions. The hopes and fears of parenthood. I can't help thinking that at this time, on this day, Some of us may be experiencing the same thoughts. Only this time it's about golf and our town. Our capacity to handle these new set of circumstances. In other words, our baby, The US Open.
And after all the anticipation, hopes and dreams, fears and trepidation it seems as though we will all get through it!
Yes, it's pouring rain. Yes, today is a practice day. But, we seem prepared. The traffic is flowing, the roadblocks are out, police are present and Tiger was on the greens.
Kind of like watching a sleeping baby in those first blissful days of parenthood. The diapers are stacked, clothes washed and ready and the grandmothers are ready for action. We've got this all under control. Right?
Only time will tell. On Thursday, the baby wakes up.

HAVERFORD — Former Masters champion Mike Weir has done just enough at qualifying to earn a spot at the U.S. Open.
Weir got one of six spots that had been set aside to accommodate anyone who moved into the top 60 in the world ranking published Monday. Kyle Stanley, who finished third at the Memorial, was at No. 60. He was the only one who qualified from the latest world ranking.
After that, five players who were alternates at the 36-hole sectional qualifying spots filled the 156-man field.
Weir lost in a playoff at the main Ohio qualifier and was first alternate. Also getting into the U.S. Open as a qualifying alternate were Ryan Palmer, Ryan Yip, Rikard Karlberg and Harold Varner III.
Weir has not played in the U.S. Open since 2010.

Woods, McIlroy, Scott together at US Open
ARDMORE, Pa. (AP) — Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott will play together the opening two rounds of the U.S. Open next week at Merion.
For the third straight year, U.S. Open officials have put the top three players in the world ranking in the same group. The U.S. Open disclosed the tee times in a tweet Friday, with the rest of the draw expected later in the day. The feature group will start at 1:14 p.m. Thursday off the first tee.
This will be the first time Woods and McIlroy have played together in any round of a major.
Woods, Scott and Phil Mickelson played together the opening two days at Torrey Pines in the 2008 U.S. Open. That was the first time the USGA went to the 1-2-3 grouping.
And they’re off.
No, not the gofers. They don’t start ‘til next week. We’re talking about the shoppers.
The massive shopping and merchandise pavilion opened at Merion Country Club.
