Its Scottish-styled bunkers are known as the "white faces of Merion." Unique to Merion are the wicker baskets painted orange and red attached to the pins, instead of the traditional flag. Merion has hosted 18 USGA championships, the most of any golf course. This is its first U.S. Open since 1981.

Length: 6,996 yards

Par: 36-34_70

Field: 156 players (10 amateurs)

Defending champion: Webb Simpson.

U.S. Open champions at Merion: Olin Dutra (1934), Ben Hogan (1950), Lee Trevino (1971), David Graham (1981).

Noteworthy: Merion is the shortest course for a major championship since the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.

Quoteworthy: "I don't think it's going to be a low-scoring U.S. Open. I hope it's not going to be a low-scoring U.S. Open. We'll see. I think the golf course has enough defense." — Graeme McDowell.

Key statistic: The winning score has been lower each of the previous four times the U.S. Open was at Merion.

Tiger tales: This is the first time since 2000 that Tiger Woods has won four times on the PGA Tour before the U.S. Open. He won the U.S. Open that year by 15 shots.

Key groups: 1:14 p.m., Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott; 7:11 a.m., Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Keegan Bradley; 12:52 p.m., Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer.

Television (all times EDT): Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., ESPN; 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., NBC; 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., ESPN. Saturday and Sunday, noon to 7:30 p.m., NBC. Monday, if necessary, noon-2 p.m. ESPN; 2 p.m.-playoff conclusion, NBC

The information contained in or attached to this e-mail contains confidential or privileged information. Thank God! Just in time for my very fashionable friend to hit the green and share her thoughts on all things golf. Granted, my source is more interested in fashion than golf. Actually, as of 7am this morning, she was looking less than thrilled with her impending date. But, sometimes a girl has got to do what a girl has got to do!
What she recounted from her journey into the "golf world" was indeed very insightful! The train ride into Rosemont and subsequent shuttle went smoothly. The main hurdle in her travels was.....MUD. Lots of mud!
Apparently the male spectators kept it basic. The standard golf shirts, baseball hats and shades were par for the course:)! The ladies were a little more inventive. The most noteworthy among them sporting shorts with their Hunter Boots!
Perhaps her most titillating observation was this, "some of the golfers were young and HOT"! Really? Who new?
There were plenty of autographs to be had and the 14th tee box was the place to be!
At the end of the day, I'd say at least one girl had a pretty good day on the green!

However I do have one experience with the US Open. It involves childbirth.
Seven years ago Phil Mickelson was supposed to win and I was desperately trying to end 30 plus hours of labor. It could have gone smoother. That would have required at least one person in the room actually looking at me and not the television. Yes, that does include my husband as well!
June, 18th 2006 the baby was finally born. Phil lost it all on the 18th hole. That is what I know about golf.
Three boys, two dogs and eight fish later, the US Open is once again an unavoidable presence in my life! as I think back, I remember the onslaught of emotions. The hopes and fears of parenthood. I can't help thinking that at this time, on this day, Some of us may be experiencing the same thoughts. Only this time it's about golf and our town. Our capacity to handle these new set of circumstances. In other words, our baby, The US Open.
And after all the anticipation, hopes and dreams, fears and trepidation it seems as though we will all get through it!
Yes, it's pouring rain. Yes, today is a practice day. But, we seem prepared. The traffic is flowing, the roadblocks are out, police are present and Tiger was on the greens.
Kind of like watching a sleeping baby in those first blissful days of parenthood. The diapers are stacked, clothes washed and ready and the grandmothers are ready for action. We've got this all under control. Right?

Only time will tell. On Thursday, the baby wakes up.

By Melissa Morgan

The information contained in or attached to this e-mail contains confidential or privileged information. Kyle Stanley, who finished third at the Memorial, was at No. 60. He was the only one who qualified from the latest world ranking.

After that, five players who were alternates at the 36-hole sectional qualifying spots filled the 156-man field.

Weir lost in a playoff at the main Ohio qualifier and was first alternate.
